Why We Homeschool

Why We Homeschool

"Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers - not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be..." 1 Peter 5:2

This verse used to be on my desk at school...back when I used to be a public school teacher...back before we had children. That seems like a lifetime ago, but the verse holds true. My flock has changed but my goal of serving hasn't.

At one time, I was one of those moms, who when asked, "Would you ever consider homeschooling your son?" answered, "Are you kidding?! I will be in jail by the end of the week and he will be dead!" You know when a major life decision makes a 180 in your life that God probably had a hand in it!  AND when God has a hand in it, it is bound to be successful!

I loved teaching other people's children.  I even LOVED middle school and science!  But the thought of teaching my one son with Asperger's scared me to death! It scared me to death until God started whispering to me that homeschooling was his plan for both me and my children! Boy, did I balk at that idea!

Being much like my kids, I had a hard time hearing God until he had to yell pretty loudly to get my attention! But my attention he did get and the rest is history! On the surface there are many reasons why we homeschool, from having children who struggle academically to extreme middle school bullying of my Asperger son, but in the end it all comes down to one thing: Obedience! God asked us to homeschool and we finally went along with Him. The end result is a perfect fit!
