Homeschool Mother's Journal 1/4/13

I typically start my Homeschool Mother's Journal Posts early in the week and add to them as events happen and time allows.  Such is NOT the case this past week.  It's Friday night, going on 10:00 and I am just now sitting down to type.  Husband and son #1 are playing basketball, daughter is at a slumber party so just son # 2 and I are home alone to amuse ourselves.

I know parents don't play (or at least aren't supposed to) favorites with their kids, and that's not what I'm doing, but son #2 is definitely the easiest kiddo to have at home alone.  I amuse myself by posting a video to facebook for the friends we skied with today while he watches Star Wars and eats a bowl of ice cream.  At least for the moment, all is well with both of our worlds! :O)

In My Life This Week...
What a wonderful time Christmas is, but how wonderful too to have the tree put away, the house clean and organized again and to get back into routines.  I must be getting old to even have this thought!  But, I was pleased to get back to school this week!

In our homeschool...
We took it east getting back into the swing of things!  We only took 1 1/2 weeks off instead of a full 2 weeks.  The kids didn't complain.  Even they seemed to be glad to start having a routine again!  Still, we started back slowly, doing just a few subjects on Wednesday, a few more on Thursday and a few more today.

Homeschool tips to share...
Take it easy when getting into or out of a routine when you are teaching special needs kiddos...  especially when one of the kiddos needs are emotional / anxiety / mood related.  He needs to "wade" into any change of routine slowly...no "cannonballs" when it comes to routine changes!  He dips one tow in at a time and slowly wades out to deeper waters!

Places we're going and people we're seeing...
The highlights of our week were definitely the fun places and people!  We are getting ready to take a group of homeschoolers to The Challenger Center near Indy next week.  We had a blast preparing for that field trip with all 32 "astronauts!"  Monday, we will blast off for the moon!
I can't wait to post some pics of our trip!

We also took some time to do REALLY FUN GYM today!  We grabbed a few friends and headed to a local park that rents cross country skis!  I am not too sore at the moment but I can tell that I am getting stiff and will be quite sore in the morning!

Despite being stiff and sore, I absolutely can't wait to do that again!

My favorite thing this week was...
Despite the fact that with six kids on the ski trail, it was not exactly quiet, the woods was beautiful!  The scenery was spectacular.  For an old birder like me, it was just stunning to see 20 pairs of cardinals or more all in the same bush!

The cardinals were stunning with the snowy background!  I was excited to spot this towhee as well!

Things I'm working on...
I have an 8th grader that I am working to prepare for high school.  I'm starting to think about classes and a schedule for him for next year.  He is somewhat of a special needs kiddo academically and emotionally.  So, where do I set the bar?  How far / hard should I push him?

Our Co-op starts next week again.  Soooooo many things to do before Tuesday...

Youth group starts up as well next week...  At least we are watching a movie to finish up our unit on bullying...not as much major planning there; I just need to write the small group discussion questions.

I'm Cooking...
After being inspired by a friend, I actually made home made noodles...that were more like dumplings.  But, they turned out pretty well for a first time, so I am inspired to try again and make them better!  The chicken soup they went in was wonderful as well!
The kids and their dad got me a deep fryer for Christmas...I never asked for one so I think THEY wanted it for their own gain! :O)  We gave it a try this past week and this is what we came up with...

This was NOT a typical meal for us, but it WAS yummy!

I'm grateful for...
My community.  When someone is hurting we really rally together in prayer and support.  You can almost always see a "Pray for ..." sign in someone's yard or on a business marquee.  I love small towns!

I'm praying for...
The most recent family whose name is on a "Pray for..." sign in town.  As much as I love my small town, I hate the fact that I nearly always know who needs prayed for and why, and sometimes it just breaks your heart  when someone so young (about my own age...because 40 something isn't old to me anymore) has been given such devastating news!

A Video to share...
From our cross country skiing adventure today!  We had the choice of gradually   going downhill through the woods or flying down the steep part!  Of course, you know what part the kids picked!  It's a good thing only the moms had the cameras so there are no videos of us!  We screamed all the way down!  ( I LOVE to downhill skii, but this grade was steeper than it looks and an old mom like me does not have much turning or shushing control in cross country skis!  Yes, I fell at the bottom, and yes, that is one of the reasons why I will be stiff and sore in the morning! ;O))

video
Notice the pile of kids building up at the bottom of the hill!

One more...just 'cause she's so cute!  AND this was her first time on skis!
